Why Use Bamboo Toilet Paper?

Aug 11, 2023Dave Hyman

You may not think much about where your toilet paper comes from, but the manufacturing process of these little white rolls is a surprisingly complex one. It involves many steps, from the felling of trees to the intricate processing of pulp into the final product.

What might seem like an inconspicuous roll of paper in your bathroom actually holds a story filled with innovation and environmental considerations. As such, choosing the right toilet paper can actually make a fairly large impact on the environment.

But thankfully, instead of cutting down trees, a more sustainable solution has been discovered. Bamboo toilet paper!

Grown in abundance, bamboo is easier to process and can even be more cost-effective in the long run.

Interested in making the switch? Here's everything you need to know about how Urban Ethos sources our eco-friendly toilet paper and passes the savings on to you.

How Is Bamboo Toilet Paper Made?

All stages of the manufacturing process are designed to be as eco-friendly as possible. From when the bamboo is first grown to when it's delivered to your doorstep, each stage has sustainability in mind.

Here's how we at Urban Ethos source our bamboo toilet paper in the most environmentally-conscious way we can. Thats why all of our toilet paper is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified.

Bamboo harvesting

Bamboo is a highly renewable resource, often growing 20 times faster than trees. Bamboo also doesn't occupy as much space as a tree, so when they are harvested, the land-clearing area is much smaller than what traditional toilet paper does to trees. This means we can harvest bamboo in such a way as to let them easily grow back without any lasting changes to the ecosystem. It's a win-win situation over traditional methods.

Pulping

Once the bamboo has been harvested, it is cut into chips and broken down into a pulp. In traditional toilet paper manufacturing, this process would require large amounts of energy, water and chemicals. On the other hand, bamboo can be broken down into pulp using safe enzymes and much less water than traditional methods.

Eco-friendly bleaching

In traditional paper-making processes, the pulp is bleached using chlorine and other hazardous chemicals. These chemicals produce toxic byproducts that are extremely harmful to the environment, especially forests. All of this is done just to give toilet paper its white appearance.

With the production of bamboo toilet paper, chlorine isn't used at all. Instead, the pulp is whitened using hydrogen peroxide. This is a much safer and eco-friendlier alternative that doesn't poison any forests.

Sheet formation

After the pulp has been cleaned and bleached, it is then spread into thin sheets and dried. Normally the drying process uses more wasteful energy, but we make sure that the energy used here comes from renewable sources.

Rolling, packaging and delivery

Now the dried sheets are ready to be rolled into toilet paper rolls, cut to size, and packaged. Our team delivers our eco-friendly bathroom products in plastic-free packaging made from recycled materials. These are then delivered with a standard courier to anywhere in Australia.

What Makes Bamboo Toilet Paper Eco-friendly?

There are a range of environmental benefits of using bamboo toilet paper.

Here are just some examples:

The Manufacturing Process

As explained in the previous section, the manufacturing process for bamboo toilet paper is much more sustainable than its traditional counterpart. The fact that it is bamboo means it is a more environmentally friendly resource to use than trees, which take much longer to grow back.

No Harmful Chemicals

No chlorine or toxic chemicals are used in the sourcing of bamboo toilet paper. Not only is this safer for you and your skin, these toxic chemicals won't be absorbed into the ground at the manufacturing site. Now the plants, trees and animals around that area can live without danger of being poisoned.

100% Biodegradable

Bamboo toilet paper is fully biodegradable and dissolves completely in any drain passage. It completely dissolves in water, meaning it doesn't form blockages in your drainage system like traditional toilet paper.

Why Bamboo Toilet Paper?

Help make your bathroom greener by making a quick switch. Each roll is made in a forest-friendly environment, without any chlorine bleach, ink, or dyes. Its soft texture also contains natural hypoallergenic and antibacterial properties, making it more suitable for people with sensitive skin.

All of this comes at a low cost compared to the benefits it provides to the environment. When you buy bamboo toilet paper, you form an eco-friendly habit that encourages others to do the same.
