Choosing Your Eco-Conscious Water Bottle

Not sure which water bottle to choose? Take the following points into consideration to help you make the right choice.

Advantages of Using Eco-Conscious Water Bottles

Using eco-conscious water bottles doesn’t just offer benefits for the environment and the planet at large, but also for you.

At Urban Ethos, we sell a range of eco-conscious water bottles by Hip, which was co-founded by entrepreneur Richard Smiedt and acclaimed designer Karim Rashid.

They created the SUGA Water Bottles, which are defined by their environmentally conscious design. They’re BPA-free and made from sugarcane stalks, greatly limiting both their health and environmental impacts.

The SUGA Water Bottles come in the following styles:

We also sell a range of reusable coffee cups manufactured by Hip.

By switching to an eco-conscious water bottle, not only are you benefiting the environment, but you’re own health as well.

Materials Used in Hip Water Bottles

Hip water bottles are primarily made from sugarcane stalks. When compared to other common water bottle materials such as stainless steel and glass, there are clear benefits.

For one, stainless steel and glass often involve processes that more directly impact the environment.

Stainless steel involves the mining of raw materials, melting them down, and other treatments. For glass, it again involves mining and considerable energy consumption to turn the raw materials into glass.

By comparison, the growth, harvest and manufacture of sugarcane stalks into usable materials tend to have less environmental impact. Sugarcane is also a natural resource that absorbs carbon dioxide during growth, which helps offset greenhouse gas emissions.

Because sugarcane grows quickly, it can be reused throughout the year and is less finite than the resources used for stainless steel and glass.

Maintaining Your 650ml Water Bottle

Here are some best-of tips for looking after your Hip water bottle.

Cleaning and Caring for Your Water Bottle

All Hip water bottles are designed for easy cleaning. They’re dishwasher safe or can be washed by hand with dish detergent (or natural alternatives) and a bottle brush.

How to Remove Odours and Stains from Your Water Bottle

Whenever you notice an unwanted odour or stain forming in your water bottle, there are natural solutions you can use to remove them.

Two of the best solutions include:

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Add a couple of tablespoons of baking soda and a small amount of white vinegar into your bottle. Once the mixture has finished fizzing, fill your bottle with warm water, let it sit for a few hours, and rinse thoroughly.

Lemon Juice

The acidic qualities of lemon juice make it a fantastic natural cleaner. For this solution, add hot water and a generous amount of lemon juice. Mix it around and then let it sit for a few hours. Rinse thoroughly.

Ensuring the Longevity of Your Eco-Conscious Water Bottle

To keep your eco water bottle in good condition for longer, follow these steps:

  • Clean your water bottle regularly to prevent the buildup of bacteria, mould, and odours.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals when cleaning your bottle - stick to mild and/or eco-conscious detergents or use natural solutions.
  • When storing your water bottle, make sure it’s completely dried out, the lid is removed, and store it in a dry, room-temperature space.
  • Regularly check your water bottle to make sure none of its components are wearing down or breaking.

FAQ

How Often Should You Clean Your Eco Water Bottle?

If you’re using your water bottle for water only, rinse it with warm water and detergent (or a natural equivalent) each day. Give it a thorough clean with a bottle brush and non-abrasive cleaning solution every few days.

If drinking liquids other than water (juices, smoothies, etc.), then you should thoroughly clean the bottle daily.

Are All Eco-Conscious Water Bottles BPA-Free?

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical that was historically used in the manufacture of many water bottles. In more recent years, due to health concerns, the push for BPA-free bottles has increased substantially.

Still, be aware that not all eco-conscious water bottles are BPA-free. Check the product details closely to confirm that the water bottle you’re considering is free from BPA.
